Stations built for 1957 fire trucks
Stations 5 and 6 opened in 1957. Today's engines are much larger than the bays they back into. At Station 6, crews stop traffic both ways on Mount Vernon Road to back the truck in after every call.
At Station 5, bedrooms are upstairs and the trucks are downstairs. A 2 a.m. call starts with a run down the stairs in the dark. Both stations would be rebuilt as single-story stations with drive-through bays.
